10 Tips to Feeling Safer on GoCom Ride

Let’s face the truth, it is quite weird getting into the car of someone you did not even know existed and trusting him to take you to your destination wherever that may  be.

Yet, this typifies the situation tens of thousands of people are subjected to daily when it has to do with ride sharing applications and companies. The system enables you to sit in your home or your present location and order a cab with an application on your phone and in a few minutes, you have a cab waiting to pick you up.

Considering the fact that this is a huge technological advancement – from having to go outside, stand on the sidewalks and keep hailing taxi after taxi – many riders are often overwhelmed by the ease, efficiency and sheer size of commuters that use online cab services daily to think of their own safety.

Today, we live in a society where anybody is susceptible to security challenges especially women and young adults. It’s not out of the ordinary to feel anxious about getting a ride especially if it is late at night or early in the morning.

Because GoCom understands that their riders enjoy and appreciate maximum security, we have made this list of tips that would help you enjoy safety during your rides when adhered to:

  1. Remain inside your present location until your driver notifies you of his arrival.

A lot of people have the habit of standing outside while waiting for their rides. These people would more often than not be found staring at their phones. While this is not a bad thing in itself, it is not quite safe because a lot of cases have been reported where unsuspecting riders have been tricked into getting into the wrong car, and this can only happen when the crook sees you standing outside and assumes you are waiting for your cab. So, the best option to prevent this is by staying indoors until you get the notification that your ride has arrived.

  2. Ensure that the driver’s name and image match those on your device.

Gocom allows riders to see the name and image of the driver that is supposed to pick them up on the application. This is to curb the possibility of getting hijacked by people pretending to be your drivers. The moment you are notified of your ride’s availability, you should first of all, ask the driver in the car for his name.

Now, here’s a way to do this! Don’t give away the name you have on your app until you have the name from the driver first.

Let’s suppose the name of the driver on the app is Musa, Don’t say “Is your name Musa?” Instead ask “What is your name?”

That way, you can easily confirm his name when he mentions it.

  3. Crosscheck the car and plate number against those on your app.

Another thing you need to cross check is the car and plate number. You can even do this without making it obvious. Just stylishly look at the car, take a mental picture of it and compare with the car image showing on your phone and/or plate number.

It is very important that you don’t get into any car that doesn’t match the description on the application. Your safety is re-enforced by following this important step.

  4. Share the details of your trip with third party (either friends or family).

Whenever you have to take a Gocom ride, always share the details of your trip with a friend or a member of your family. This can be done through the application by simply clicking on a button and then whoever you are sharing the details with will be able to track your trip without even having to install the Gocom app. They also get access to important information like the name of the driver, the location, the brand of the car and the license plate number of the car.

This way, you have someone else besides the Gocom team keeping track of your trip as you ride.

  5. Check the rating of the driver.

Every Gocom driver has a rating on the Gocom app and this rating is shared with the rider whenever you order a ride and the driver accepts it. if you are not comfortable with the rating of the driver, you can easily cancel the ride and place another order for another ride. There’s no penalty for this and while we trust all our drivers, you will have to trust your gut on this one.

However, if you want to cancel, it’s important that you do so before the driver arrives.

  6. Use in-built real-time maps in the course of your trip to ensure you are still on the right track.

Make use of the in-built real-time driver tracking maps!

You can do anything you want whenever you are riding with Gocom but you need to routinely check your maps to keep track of where you are at the moment and whether you are still on the right track. Nobody is saying that you should keep staring at your maps and crosschecking with every sign you see… that would be creepy.

But you should try and crosscheck once in a while especially if you are not sure of where you are.

  7. Stay off the front passenger seat.

If you are a lady, staying at the back would be the best option to avoid groping hands and sexual assaults especially if you are riding alone plus you could easily get out of the car without pressure.

  8. If you can, take group trips.

As much as it lies within your power, share your trips with other people too. In other words, take group trips. There’s only so much one person can do to three or more people. Yeah?

  9. Keep your personal information, well… personal!

When you get into your ride, refrain from sharing personal details with the driver. Talking isn’t prohibited but irrespective of how nice the driver is and how interesting the conversation may seem, just keep your personal details to yourself.

  10. Remain polite.

Finally, there have been a lot of stories of people having arguments and quarrels with drivers. To avoid this and have a pleasant ride, being polite to your driver is a very key factor.

Gocom is committed to making sure that every rider is safe and enjoys his/her ride. However, please endeavor to follow these tips in conjunction with other measures that Gocom has in place. You are assured of a pleasant ride.
